The fellowship provides editorial and financial assistance to reporters who require the time and funds to work on intricate, time-consuming projects.

You have a fantastic concept for a high-impact story that “Follows the Money,” but you lack the funding to make it happen. Please get in touch with the McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism.

The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Center for Business Journalism offers seasoned journalists grants up to $15,000 as well as the editorial assistance required to produce in-depth enterprise and investigative stories that explore important economic, financial, or business issues across a wide range of topics. You don’t have to cover business to apply; several of our past Fellows were generalists or covered beats like health care, education, or the environment. Others have concentrated on topics like corporate accountability or economic injustice.

We accept submissions in text, audio, photo, and short-form video from both staff and freelance journalists, and we especially appreciate those that combine formats to produce a multimedia package. We seek out projects that tackle significant regional or local concerns and tell gripping global or national tales or profile underrepresented populations or problems. The application process is especially recommended for journalists of color and those with different backgrounds.

Application Process and Interview Dates

Through the associated web form, applicants should submit a well-focused story proposal of at most three pages. Consider it a pitch similar to one you might make to an editor at a newspaper, magazine, audio, or digital outlet: provide us with enough initial reporting and supporting evidence to show that the story is credible. The proposal should emphasize the story’s novel and noteworthy aspects as well as its significance and prospective effects. The proposal should also indicate where essential articles on the subject have appeared elsewhere and how it differs from those tales. Additionally, applicants must provide a brief description of their intended reporting strategy and a schedule for finishing the story. However, if you have a media source in mind, please mention it in your proposal, even if you don’t have to have one set up before applying.

Candidates should also include three samples of their journalism. The examples should be works that have been professionally published and demonstrate your capacity to tell a complex tale in the suggested media. Please also send us your most recent resume. There are no references required at the time of entry. Still, those selected as finalists will be expected to submit recommendations from two editors or other people familiar with their work—candidates for freelance work whose inability to obtain references can consider solutions with the McGraw Center.
